Travelling to Türkiye for treatment: ID card or passport?

Most Europeans can visit Türkiye without a visa, but the rules differ by nationality and by document. Checking them before you book the first trip avoids the worst kind of surprise.

In brief

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists visa rules by nationality. Citizens of most European countries can visit for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days, in many cases within any 180-day period. Some nationalities may enter with a national ID card instead of a passport; the Ministry keeps a separate list. Check the current rules for your own nationality and document before booking each trip.

All-on-6 abroad normally means two trips a few months apart. That makes entry rules worth checking twice: once when you plan, and again before each journey. For most Europeans the answer is reassuring, because visa-free travel to Türkiye is common. But the details differ by nationality, and the question of whether you can travel with an identity card rather than a passport catches people out. This article explains how to check, using the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the source, as it stood in October 2026.

Where the official rules are

Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes visa information for foreigners, country by country. It is the source airlines and border officers rely on, and it is the one to check. Avoid relying on travel forums or old articles: rules have changed several times over the past decade. The official e-Visa website exists for nationalities that need a visa; if your nationality is visa-exempt, you do not need it, and you should be wary of unofficial sites that charge for “visas” you do not require.

Visa-free stays for European nationalities

According to the Ministry’s list, citizens of most European countries can visit Türkiye for tourism without a visa. The wording differs slightly between countries. A sample as we found it:

  • Germany, France and Switzerland: visa-free for travel of up to 90 days.
  • The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Ireland, Spain and Portugal: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Ukraine: visa-free for up to 90 days, with ordinary, diplomatic and service passports.

Other nationalities have their own entries. If you hold a residence permit in an EU country but a passport from elsewhere, the rule that applies is the one for the passport you travel on.

How the 180-day rule works for two trips

Where the rule is 90 days in any 180-day period, the days you spend in Türkiye on both trips count together if they fall within the same 180 days. An All-on-6 trip is usually short. Precious Dental’s package includes 4 hotel nights on the first trip and 5 on the second, so even with a few extra days of holiday, most patients are far below the limit. If you plan a long stay in Türkiye for other reasons as well, add up the days.

Identity card or passport?

Some nationalities can enter Türkiye with a national identity card instead of a passport. The Ministry keeps a separate list of these countries, and some entries carry conditions. Ukraine is a clear example: the Ministry says Ukrainian nationals may use valid biometric identity cards for direct travel from Ukraine to Türkiye. Other countries’ entries have had time limits in the past. Because conditions change, check the current list for your nationality rather than relying on what a friend did a few years ago.

Even where an ID card is accepted, there are reasons to consider a passport:

  • If you connect through another country, that country’s rules apply during the connection.
  • Airlines may have their own document requirements at check-in.
  • A passport is accepted everywhere, which helps if your plans change.

Checks to make before each trip

  1. Look up your nationality on the Ministry’s visa list and note the rule.
  2. If you want to travel with an ID card, check the Ministry’s ID card list and any conditions.
  3. Check the expiry date of your document, and allow a generous margin beyond your return date. If in doubt about the minimum validity for your nationality, ask the airline or the Turkish consulate.
  4. Make sure the name on your ticket matches your document exactly.
  5. Carry the clinic’s address and phone number, and your hotel booking, in case you are asked about the purpose of your visit.
  6. Keep your treatment plan and any medicines in your hand luggage, with a list of what they are for.

The second trip

The second trip comes several months after the first, once the implants have healed. Check your document again at that point; a passport that was fine in spring may be close to expiry by autumn. If you have changed your name or renewed your document between trips, tell the clinic so that its records match. The treatment timeline explains how the trips fit together, and healing and care covers the months in between.

Arriving in Antalya

Antalya’s airport has direct flights from many European cities, more in summer than in winter, and connections through Istanbul all year. Precious Dental’s package includes transfers between the airport, hotel and clinic on both trips, so you are met on arrival. Flights are not included and are booked by you; we recommend flexible tickets for the first trip in case the treatment plan needs an extra day.

Health insurance is a separate question

Visa-free entry says nothing about health cover. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid in Türkiye, and ordinary travel insurance often excludes planned treatment. Read why the EHIC does not cover Türkiye before you buy insurance for the trip.

Travelling after surgery

Entry is one side; the flight home is the other. After implant surgery, most patients fly home within a few days, as planned in the package. Practical points for the return journey:

  • Carry your medicines and the written instructions in your hand luggage.
  • Bring soft snacks and a water bottle; airport food is not designed for new temporary teeth.
  • Some swelling is normal; if you are worried before flying, ask the clinic to check you.
  • Keep the clinic’s WhatsApp number on your phone and the hotel and transfer details for the second trip in the same place.

Our chapter on healing and care covers the first days in more detail.

Travelling with a companion

Many patients bring a partner or friend, especially on the surgery trip. Your companion needs their own valid document and must meet the entry rules for their own nationality, which may differ from yours. If your companion has a different nationality, check both entries on the Ministry’s list.

Changes to the rules

Entry rules can change at short notice, for example for political or health reasons. Check the Ministry’s page shortly before each trip, and if your government publishes travel advice for Türkiye, read that too. Airlines will refuse boarding if documents do not meet the rules, so a five-minute check is worth it.

Documents to carry

  • Your passport or accepted ID card, and a photocopy or photo of it stored separately.
  • Your flight and hotel details.
  • The clinic’s address, phone and WhatsApp number.
  • Your health summary and medicine list.
  • Your travel insurance policy number and emergency assistance phone number.

Mobility and assistance

If you have limited mobility, request assistance at the airports when you book your flights; airlines and airports provide it free in most of Europe. Tell the clinic as well, so that the transfer driver and hotel can help on arrival.

In short

  • Check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs list for your nationality; most Europeans can visit visa-free for up to 90 days.
  • An ID card is accepted only for some nationalities and sometimes only under conditions.
  • Check your document before each of the two trips, and keep the clinic’s details with you.

Questions readers ask

How long can I stay in Türkiye without a visa?

For most European nationalities, up to 90 days; for many, within any 180-day period. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the rule for each country.

Can I enter with my national ID card?

Some nationalities can. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps a list of countries whose citizens can enter with national ID cards, sometimes with conditions such as travelling directly from the home country. Check the current list.

Do two trips count towards the 90 days?

Where the rule is 90 days in any 180-day period, days from both trips count if they fall within the same 180 days. All-on-6 trips are short, so most patients stay well within the limit.

Does my passport need to be valid for a minimum time?

Check the current requirement for your nationality with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or your airline, and allow a margin beyond your return date.

What if I hold dual nationality?

Travel on one document consistently and check the rules for that nationality. Airlines check documents against the nationality on the document you present.
